2 days in one! I was so tired when I got home last night, writing was just not in the cards. Let’s see how good my food recall is!!
For breakfast yesterday I had 1/2 a sweet potato and some onion cooked in lard. I threw some asparagus in when the potatoes were just about done and I put three eggs over easy on top. So good!
I had a lot of running around to do since the birthday party my daughter was supposed to attend on Sunday got rescheduled to Monday. We still had to buy a gift, so we took care of that and ran a few more errands. The party was at 12:50 and the kids ate pizza, ice cream, and cupcakes right away. I was starting to get hungry, but I was a good girl and declined a cup cake :). Once those 6&7 year old were good and sugared up they went roller skating 😱. That was something to see!! After the party I ran my daughter over to day care and I headed to work. It was 3 by the time I got there so I ate lunch while I checked my emails and such. I had leftover cauli rice with a can of sardines and a whole avocado mixed all in. I sprinkled some coconut aminos on there and it was an interesting lunch to say the least. Very filling! Held me over until I got home and had steak and asparagus. Washed it down with some peppermint hot chocolate…I think I’m addicted!
Today I started off with the same breakfast as yesterday minus the asparagus. I had an all day meeting so I packed some toasted coconut chips to snack on. For lunch they served cold cuts, bread, potato salad, macaroni salad, and pickles. I skipped the bread, took some roast beef and pickles. I was super hungry by the time the meeting was over and I picked up the kids. We had zoodles and sauce with green peppers and sausage. My husbands favorite :).
After dinner I decided to test my sauerkraut. It’s been a week and the recipes I was going off of said 7-14 days. It tastes pretty good! I’m not gonna lie, it makes me a little nervous to eat something that’s been sitting on the counter in an open jar for a week, so I did a little reading about what goes on during the fermentation process. I always feel better about things when I fully understand the ins and outs of it. I still have more reading to do, but here are a couple sites I’ve browsed through this far.
Two weeks down, one week to go!! Yesss!! While I’m not looking to add excessive amounts of sweets back into my diet when my 21 days are up, I am looking forward to a few things:
1. Eating more fruit! I have certainly developed a newfound love for Granny Smith apples but I miss grapes and ripe bananas a ton.
2. Maple syrup on my Sunday morning pancakes or waffles. I tend to only make these once a week, (if that) as eating them too often pushes out more nutrient dense foods that I could be eating with my morning eggs, but I do like a little drizzle of pure maple syrup on them when I do have them.
3. I’ve come to realize that out of all the paleo treats I’ve made, I have never yet tried to make paleo brownies! And there are so many great recipes out there that seem to be popping up in front of me during this detox! I may just celebrate on day 22 with a tray of brownies and a candle! 🎉🎉
I was trying to think of 5 things that I miss, but I just can’t…which is good. I know the list of new habits and things I’ve learned from doing a sugar detox is much longer and I’ll share that list later this week. 🙂
Now, what yummies did I eat today. For breakfast I had cabbage sautéed in bacon fat topped with two fried eggs. Lunch was a sweet potato and the last of my venison stew. I also had a peppermint hot chocolate to warm up before I headed out to work. I had made dinner in the morning after we had breakfast. I usually try to have something easy ready for my husband on the evenings that I work. Today I made the Asian style meatballs from the 21DSD guidebook with cauli rice. So, I had a packed a little dish of that for myself. They turned out pretty tasty, even though I misplaced the chunk of fresh ginger I had bought for them.
After work I came home and threw together a chocolate mug cake and a little chocolate whip, unsweetened of course! A tasty little treat.
Today was better than yesterday. No crazy urges for peanut m&ms or anything! I got up earlier than everyone else to let my chickens out and to drink my coffee in peace. I also wanted a chance to look through my 2015 goal workbook that I had downloaded. I have lots of things I want to make happen, and I’m hoping that putting these things down in words will help keep me focused and moving forward! So, I started to scroll through and fill in some of the workbook pages while I sipped my peppermint mocha coffee. Once the kids and the hubby were up I made some breakfast. Bacon, French toast, and eggs for them. For myself, I sautéed some broccoli in the bacon fat and then scrambled in some eggs. I heated up some leftover gravy from my Crockpot chicken and poured that over my eggs and broccoli. Washed that down with some almond milk. Yum!
Now I knew I would be out all afternoon so I should have planned lunch better, but I didn’t. I should have packed a few hard boiled eggs, something easy to eat….what I did pack were some toasted coconut flakes. I took my daughter to ballet and then met up with my mother to drive out and visit my grandmother. My mother is also doing the detox this month so she had some 21DSD friendly snacks packed as well. Herb almond crackers, cauliflower hummus, chopped veggies, and some nut mixes. We grazed on all that throughout the trip down and while hanging out at my grandmothers house. Then we went out to dinner. Dessert was tempting me from the case while we waited for a table and I swear the cookies on the plate by the register were laughing at me! I was so hungry!! Once we were seated I ordered a chicken taco salad. Lettuce, tomato, olives, jalapeños, salsa, guac, chicken…not too bad.
I was still hungry when I got home at the end of the day, so I had 3 hard boiled eggs and a mug of my peppermint hot chocolate.
Wow! I don’t know why, but these last few days have been really difficult. I just had the strongest desire to go to the store, buy a bag of peanut m&ms ms, and inhale the whole thing! I didn’t and now the urge is fading slowly, but I really almost did it. I know if I had I would have completely regretted it and had a stomach ache. All day long at work, the same thing…I wanted candy so bad. I didn’t have any cravings like that with my first detox. I’m thinking its work stress. :(.
My food was comprised completely of leftovers today. I’ll be heading to the farm tomorrow for more meat, so I wanted to clean out what’s in the fridge. For breakfast I had leftover meatloaf…who says breakfast has to be eggs?? And for lunch I had leftover version stew. I originally planned on making an actual dinner, but was running late at work so I had my husband pick up the kids and grab Chinese food for the three of them. When I got home I ate more meatloaf.
I made a cup of peppermint hot chocolate to quench my candy craving. It did the trick!
Here’s how I made it:
Peppermint Hot Chocolate-
2/3 cup full fat coconut milk
1/3 cup almond milk
3 tbsp unsweetened cacao powder
1/8 tsp peppermint extract
Stir the almond milk and coconut milk in a pot and bring to boil. Reduced to a simmer and add cacao powder. Whisk in until completely dissolved. Pour into mug and stir in peppermint extract. ENJOY!
*You could add a tablespoon of maple syrup or raw honey to sweeten it if you’re not doing a sugar detox 😉
I’m so tired! I went to bed early last night since I had stayed up way too late the night before. I was all set to get a good night sleep, but work had other plans. I got two alarm calls from my store. One at 12:15am, which I barely remember. I talked to them and fell back to sleep. The second call came a little after 2am 😢. That one woke me up more and it took a good 30 minutes for me to fall back to sleep. An interrupted sleep is never as restful as an uninterrupted sleep. Oh well…I dragged my butt out of bed at 5:30am and hopped in the shower. Visions of coffee cups dancing in my head. 😂. I had my coffee while I got my son ready for school. I made my breakfast when I got my daughter up. I had intended on having bacon and egg biscuits again. BUT, while I was cooking the bacon and eggs I forgot about the biscuits under the broiler until it was far too late. A very sad morning. I had some cabbage left in the fridge so I sautéed that in the bacon fat and scrambled in some eggs. Breakfast was served.
I headed off to work with a Baggie of roasted almonds and a container of venison stew. I snacked on some almonds around 11 and ate my stew around 1. Finished up and headed home around 5. I threw together PaleOMG’s italian meatloaf, my favorite meatloaf recipe and threw that and a sweet potato in the oven to bake while I ran to pick the kids up from taekwondo. While I did that I ate 3 more of my almond butter cups. 😱. I got home just as the meatloaf was finishing up. I quickly spiralized a zucchini and sautéed it in butter and divided it up amongst the 4 of us.
After dinner I ate the last two of my almond butter cups and decided I will never make them during a detox again, because CLEARLY, they are a food that triggers unhealthy overindulgence. Even though they are sweetener free they are still a treat and I like them too much!! Also, I wanted to make mention of sweet potatoes. They are technically on the NO list for level 3 unless you are using an energy modification, which is generally used for athletes, people who work out, and pregnant/nursing mothers. I did my first round in December without eating them, since I don’t actually “work out” regularly…or at all really. I also limited other starchy veggies like butternut squash, acorn squash, etc. (which are on the limit list). I found that I lost too much weight though, which was not my intention going into the detox! Considering the weight loss factor and my high activity level at work I decided this time around that using the energy modification was a better choice for me. And, while I do love sweet potatoes they don’t trigger an urge to overindulge like some little almond butter cups I used to know……

Woohoo! I’ve made it half way 🎉🎉. Today was a challenge though. I work at night all weekend (2-10pm), which means that when I get home after work at 10:30 I’m still wound up. It takes me a while to settle down and get sleepy. So, I stay up late until I’m tired. Today was my first day back 9-5 since last Thursday, and I stayed up way too late last night and had to get up way too early today. I was tired, on top of not having brought enough food! I so badly wanted that late afternoon second cup of coffee today, but I held strong and didn’t have it. I was also craving a snack, any snack! But I didn’t cave.
I started my morning off with a fantastic breakfast. I had left over herb drop biscuits so I stuck them under the broiler to warm them while I cooked up some bacon and eggs. I put them on the biscuits and voila! Bacon and egg biscuits. They held up quite nicely and tasted divine.
Lunch was leftover chicken and Brussels sprouts smothered in gravy.
I WISH I had brought more, but I didn’t. After work I stopped home to check my venison stew before I went to take Lianna to ballet. Wednesday is crockpot day since the kids have late activities, I need a meal that will cook itself. I stirred up the stew, added some arrowroot to thicken it up, and turned the crockpot to warm since the piece of venison I tasted was perfect. I also threw some potatoes in the oven to bake at 400 while I changed and looked for her ballet stuff. I left the oven on right until I was ready to go then I shut it off, but left the potatoes in with the hopes that by the time I got home they would be cooked through. And it worked! We got home around 7pm and my potato was cooked enough to eat, and honestly by that point I was so hungry, I probably would have eaten it raw! I can’t even tell you how deliciously warm and flavorful that stew was! Totally hit the spot on this cold night. It’s hard to take a pretty picture of stew, but believe me it was excellent 🙂
I ate 2 little almond butter cups while I did home work with Lianna and after I put the kids to bed, this happened:

I don’t think I’ve ever cooked as much in one day as I did today! Wow! I have bone broth on the stove, which I’ll let simmer until probably about 10pm tonight, then I’ll strain it and let it cool for an hour or so before putting it in mason jars in the fridge. I made beef jerky in the oven with a London broil from the farm. I made lemon vanilla meltaways, and while they set up in the freezer I got some raw sauerkraut prepared, in jars, and ready to ferment! I’m pretty excited about that one. I feel like if I’m lacking anything in my diet its probiotics, so now I’ll be covered there 👍. Then I made some sweetener free almond butter cups…they are really good!!
Now what did I cook that I actually ate today!? Although, no doubt, I tasted tested everything I Made 😉
For breakfast I had two eggs with peppers, onions, and some chunks of London broil that had gotten too tiny for me to slice thin for the jerky. And a glass of almond milk 🙂
Around lunch time my stomach had gotten queasy. Too much tasting of the treats I had made! The lemon vanilla meltaways and the almond butter cups are very rich and made with coconut oil and coconut butter. One small piece as a treat is one thing, but I overdid the tasting. So, I drank a cup of traditional medicinals eater’s Digest peppermint tea. That settled my stomach so I could fill it with something substantial instead of just coconut oil 😱. For lunch I reheated a pork chop and the last of the veggies the hubby had made and ate that along with a green tipped banana.
After lunch I put a free range chicken in the crockpot using Nom Nom Paleo’s slow cooker roast chicken and gravy recipe. I let that cook for about 4 1/2 hours. With that I sautéed some Brussels sprouts in bacon fat and baked the herb drop biscuits from the 21DSD guide book. This is my favorite recipe for a whole chicken. It stays deliciously juicy.
And the best part is I have leftovers for lunch at work tomorrow, and I have extra biscuits, so I’ll be making bacon and egg sandwiches on them for breakfast!!
I’ll be having an almond butter cup in a little bit for dessert and a cup of tea to relax. This detox is going SO much easier than the first. 9 days in and I have loads of energy and I feel like I’ve hit that sweet spot, where my meals are perfectly satisfying and I don’t NEED a snack or dessert.
