Today I met up with my mother, as per our usual Saturday routine, to visit a local farm for our meat. This farm sells grassfed beef and pasture raised pork, as well as free range whole chickens and eggs from another local farm. I found this farm by doing some internet researching after having read a few books on Paleo. A big factor in a paleo lifestyle is eating high quality protein. Animals that are raised in their natural environment, eating what nature intended them to are significantly healthier animals than their concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) relatives. CAFO animals are confined, more likely to get sick, and they are fed feed that is nothing like what they would eat in their natural environment. Animals kept on farms such as the one I visit each week are happy, free, healthy, and eating what nature intended. The cows graze freely on open pastures and the pigs eat what they dig up as they root around in woodlands. Meat from pasture raised animals contains a much healthier fatty acid profile than grain fed animals. Grass-fed beef is also higher in B-vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin K, and trace minerals like magnesium, calcium, and selenium. Today was a pretty cool day at the farm. The previous week my mother had gone without me and ended up getting to see the cows up close to take some pictures, so today we brought the kids and she took us back to where they were. My daughter got a kick out of it….my son was a tad grumpy because he was cold. And of course I only got one picture in before my phone died, but it was pretty neat to see them in their natural environment.
Now that you’ve looked at my adorable future London broil 😉 lets see what sugar free goodness I ate today. Coffee first…of course!! Now, I knew between my daughter’s ballet class, our farm visit, and work at 2 I would be having a late lunch, so I whipped up a large and perfectly satisfying breakfast. 2 scrambled eggs, 1/2 an avocado, 2 homemade sausage patties, and 1/2 a sweet potato fried in grassfed beef tallow.
That plate of deliciousness held me over through all my errand running until I got home at 2. Clearly I was going to be late for work. I made the kids lunch, whipped up some almond milk with the almonds I had been soaking and then threw together a quick lunch for myself. A can of wild planet sardines, a Baggie of my herb crackers, and a glass of my almond milk. I ate the sardines on the crackers….it was actually really good!! Oh, and I had my kids each try a bite of the sardines…and they both liked it!! 😁👌. Made me proud.
Dinner was leftover cauli mash and the last piece of salmon. I forgot to take a picture! Please forgive me. I had a green apple too, and when I got home from work I had a few spoons of homemade almond butter.
It’s been a long day, yet I still feel surprisingly energized! And I swear I haven’t had a coffee since 8 this morning. I’m also feeling like I need less to snack on between meals.
